(Series) Defining Moment #2
The person you least expect could one day be the
one who can help you get where you want to be.
Incredible True Story
When I was 14 yrs old, I joined a Karate Class in my town. I worked
hard and trained 4-5 days per week practicing the fundamentals every
day for many hours so I could master my skills and become a black belt.
Pretty soon, I started to win first place trophies in karate tournaments.
My Sensei made me the leader of the karate school. I led the classes and
made sure the other students perfected their skills.
One day, a shy and timid six year old little boy named Peter joined our
karate class. I could see he was eager to learn. I took him under my
wing and helped him learn karate. Week after week, Peter would come
to karate class. I was kind and patient with him and he made great
progress.
I went on to earned my black belt in a year and a half. And then my
family moved to another state. I never saw Peter again until 24 years
later.
In 2011, I get a surprise message on Facebook from Peter (the six year
old boy from Karate class. He was all grown up)! He told me he had been
searching for me. He said I had inspired him and he looked up to me all
those years.
Peter then told me he lived in Los Angeles, California. He went on to
become a black belt, he has been cast in martial arts movies AND he
currently works for NBC and freelances for MTV!
Then Peter congratulated me on my THINgloss business and he offered to
introduce me to his brother who was a TV producer for Fox Business
Network in New York. And that is how I landed an interview on
FOX Business Network (a global news outlet with millions of viewers).
The appearance helped me attract a lot of new opportunities and sales
for my business. Wow! What an unexpected blessing!
(April teaching karate to students in class)
Peter is now mentoring students in karate like I helped him.
He keeps me updated on what he’s doing and I’m so proud of him!!
Here are the two lesson’s I learned from this incredible
experience…
Lesson #1 – There are people around you that are watching what
you say and what you do. You are mentoring them whether you realize
it or not. People like your children, other people’s children, friends,
employees, students, other community leaders, people on social media,
coworkers, etc. You teach people the most by who you are being. You
are making a powerful impact on other people’s lives.
Lesson #2 – The person you least expect could one day be the one who
can help you get where you want to be. So treat everyone with kindness,
seek to promote others and never ignore people because you think they
are “smaller” than you. This is true when you are seeking collaboration
partners in business.
On the flip side, if you want people to promote you/your business
be excellent at what you do, seek to promote others first and
build your own following.
Much love,
April Yvette
