Your level of confidence is a powerful way of being that can create a
winning streak (extraordinary results).

From my perspective, here’s how competence builds confidence and how that can lead to a winning streak for you too.

In sports, a winning streak means a consecutive number of games won. In business or sales it could mean a consecutive number of new sales or new clients that you were able to solve their problem. For a stay-at-home mom, a winning streak could be how many words your child learns to read with your help.

Increased competence can improve everyone’s life, marriage, business revenue, sales, charity, quality of child care, communication and more.

I’ve personally experienced this winning streak phenomenon in sports (martial arts), my sales career, my business and my family.

What is Competence?

According to Merriam-webster.com, “Competence is the ability to do something well.”

A competent person is someone who possesses the skills, knowledge, beliefs, experience, expertise, resources, or capacity to do what they say they can do.

People choose to follow leaders who are both competent and confident.
People choose to do business with people who are both competent and confident.
HR Managers choose to hire people who are both competent and confident

How competence builds confidence

Competence is doing what you do, REALLY well. Mastering your unique skills and talents is a choice. It takes commitment, time and willingness to do the work. But when you do it, you will gain more confidence and it will benefit the people around you.
1. Choosing to read six or more books on your area of expertise, business, industry, or your interests every year builds competence. (I read every day. It’s a habit.)2. Choosing to regularly invest in world-class training every year to improve your skills builds competence. (I personally invest $2,000 to $4,000 per year on training annually. I believe taking at least one or two courses annually is important for everyone.)3. Choosing to subscribe to and read magazines & blogs (for your industry/niche/interests) will help you stay on top of the trends and gain a wider perspective which builds competence. (I subscribe to several magazines and blogs)
4. Choosing to learn from other successful people through research and interviewing them (3+ people annually) builds competence. (I study and interview experts regularly)
5. Being open to new, creative ways of thinking or a new strategy.
6. Create Case Studies. Do experiments in your business and/or life. Document your intentions, what you did, what results happened and what you learned. This is a great way to learn from your own personal experiences and that builds competence. (I do experiments in my business and life regularly and document why it worked or didn’t work)
We could all make excuses for why we don’t do these things such as I don’t have time, I don’t have the money, or I’m too busy. But at the end of the day the people who are the most competent and confident are most likely to experience a winning streak, are an asset to themselves and to others and get to live the life they desire.

The first step to increasing your competence is being willing
to tell the truth. That is the starting point. I’ve been there too.
